Student on-call service: support for the clinic team and insights for students
A new student on-call service supports the team at the University Hospital for General, Visceral, Vascular and Transplant Surgery Magdeburg and offers medical students unique insights. The service was set up to take blood samples in the late afternoon, assist in emergency operations as a second assistant in the operating theater and - under medical supervision - look after the liver perfusion machine during the preparation of transplants.
The idea was born out of the growing challenges posed by increasing patient numbers and emergency operations. The team currently consists of five students who are on duty from Monday to Friday. If the response is positive, the initiative is to be extended to weekends in future.
For Leon Gärtner, a 9th semester medical student, the service is a unique opportunity: “Taking part in the student on-call service is an incredibly enriching experience for me. I get insights that I would never have in my normal studies - such as the opportunity to be present during a liver transplant. Such moments are not only professionally impressive, but also motivate me personally to pursue my dream of becoming a surgeon with full passion. These experiences shape me and give me the feeling of really being part of the team.”

For the clinic, the student on-call service means a noticeable reduction in staff workload. At the same time, the students gain valuable surgical experience and improve their practical skills. Especially those who aspire to a career in surgery see the initiative as an ideal opportunity to get to know the subject at first hand.
Students who are interested in surgery and practical experience can already register now without obligation for the planned expansion of the team.
