University Medicine Magdeburg presents new aspects in the treatment and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Prof. Dr. med. Aiden Haghikia, Director of the University Clinic for Neurology Magdeburg and Dr. med. Heike Stephanik, specialist in neurology and head of the outpatient clinic for multiple sclerosis at the University Clinic for Neurology Magdeburg, together with the state association DMSG S-A/LV Halle e.V., invite you to this year's patient seminar for multiple sclerosis. The event will take place on May 30, 2024 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the canteen on the campus of University Medicine, in House 41 at Leipzigerstr. 44. Under this year's motto, "MS in motion", Prof. Haghikia's team and the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (Deutsche Multiple Sklerose Gesellschaft Bundesverband e.V.) would like to draw attention to the fact that the treatment options for MS are constantly evolving. They also want to emphasize the important role that physical activity plays in the success of MS treatment.A digital exercise program and the Exopulse Mollii Suit will be presented at the event. The latter is a neuromodulation suit that is used to relax spastic and tense muscle groups, strengthen weak muscles and relieve associated pain. The Exopulse Mollii Suit is a groundbreaking innovation in the treatment of neurological disorders and their accompanying symptoms.

The event will open with a welcoming address by Dr. Stephanik, who will also moderate the program. This will be followed by specialist lectures by Dr. Stephanik and Dr. Mike Matzke, specialist in neurology, among others, in which new therapeutic approaches in MS treatment and aspects of ageing with MS will be presented. An integral part of this series of events is the direct exchange with the speakers in personal discussions and those who support those affected in everyday life.In the second part of the event, participants have the opportunity to interact with the experts in small discussion groups and to get active themselves and try out the exercise programs.

Background information on multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease in which the patient's own immune system damages myelin sheaths in the brain and spinal cord. This can lead to sensory disturbances, fatigue, pain, paralysis and dizziness. MS often progresses in relapses with acute phases of the disease and symptom-free intervals. This form is also known as relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (remitting = regressing). If many relapses occur within a short period of time, experts speak of a highly active course of the disease. Genetic predispositions, environmental factors such as smoking, infections and poor diet may be linked to the onset of the disease. Obesity can also be a factor. Many medications are now available for relapsing-remitting MS. The chronic or insidious form of the disease continues to pose a therapeutic challenge.
